According to the USGS the earthquake was caused by a sudden thrust, or release of built up stress along the major fault line where the Indian plate sits, carrying India slowly underneath the Eurasian plate which carries much of Europe and Asia. Nepal sits on the boundary line of two massive tectonic plates. When they collided, it caused this major 7.8 magnitude earthquake.
